MTV history: The evolution of the Video Jockey and music video culture

Since its launch on August 1, 1981, MTV has transformed the music industry by evolving the traditional radio DJ into the Video Jockey (VJ). This role provided essential context, news, and rhythm to the continuous rotation of music videos, which became the cornerstone of the channel's programming.

The original American VJ lineup included Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, J. J. Jackson, and Martha Quinn. These personalities helped humanize the channel, preventing it from feeling like an automated playlist.
