Muş discovery: New endemic plant species Fritillaria damlana identified
A research team led by Professor Murat Kürşat from Bitlis Eren University has discovered a new plant species on Kurtik Mountain in Muş, Türkiye. The species, named Fritillaria damlana (locally referred to as the Muş Ters Lalesi), is an endemic plant that grows exclusively at altitudes above 2,550 meters.
Following three years of field studies conducted between 2024 and 2026, researchers used molecular and palynological analyses to confirm the plant was a previously unidentified species within the Fritillaria genus. The discovery brings the total number of Fritillaria species identified in Türkiye to 63.
The species is characterized by matte leaves, purple bell-shaped flowers, and a three-parted long style. The scientific name, Fritillaria damlana, was chosen to honor Damla Kürşat. The study was published in the international peer-reviewed journal Phytotaxa.
