MUAC presents exhibition on the history of Mexican seating design

The Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) at UNAM is hosting an exhibition titled ‘La historia de cómo sentarse. Variaciones del asiento en México’ (The history of how to sit. Variations of the seat in Mexico). Curated by Ana Elena Mallet, the exhibition runs from August 1 to October 11.

The showcase features over 40 pieces from the MUAC Modern and Contemporary Design Collection in Mexico, alongside works from private collections. The exhibition explores how seating—ranging from chairs and armchairs to traditional equipal and benches—reflects Mexican cultural identity, social coexistence, and the evolution of space.

Rather than a strict chronology, the exhibition highlights the dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and modern industrial design. It features works by influential designers and architects, including Clara Porset, Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, Héctor Esrawe, and Oscar Hagerman, among others. The pieces utilize diverse materials such as wood, palm, wicker, leather, and steel to represent different eras of Mexican modernity.
