Muammer Karaca Theatre reopens in Istanbul after restoration
The historic Muammer Karaca Theatre in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, has reopened following a comprehensive restoration project led by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Heritage and IBB Culture. The venue had been closed to theatrical activities since 2012.
The renovated space is designed to serve as a multi-purpose cultural platform, featuring a 300-person auditorium, a theater house, and multi-purpose spaces. While the restoration aimed to modernize the facility for contemporary needs, Ulvi Alacakaptan, a relative of the legendary Muammer Karaca, noted that the renovation resulted in the removal of the original revolving stage and the orchestra pit.
To mark the reopening, a ‘Theatre Festival’ is scheduled through the end of October, featuring 97 different events. The program includes plays such as ‘52 Hertz’ and ‘Ahududu’, as well as acoustic concerts, workshops, and panel discussions with various artists and directors.
