Muan County opposes Gwangju Airport international flight proposal

Tensions are rising in South Korea regarding the relocation of the Gwangju military airport to Muan. Muan County officials have expressed strong opposition to a proposal to temporarily operate international flights at Gwangju Airport. Local leaders argue that such a move could delay the long-promised integration of Gwangju's civilian airport into Muan International Airport.

Muan International Airport has faced operational issues due to runway safety concerns, leading to discussions about temporary international flight alternatives. However, Muan officials maintain that the priority should be the normalization and repair of Muan's own facilities rather than shifting traffic back to Gwangju.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of National Defense and regional authorities are working to accelerate the relocation project. Efforts are underway to establish a basic plan for the new military airport, addressing complex issues such as sea reclamation scales, US military facility negotiations, and noise impact mitigation. A resident vote regarding the relocation is expected around October, though local opposition regarding airport operations and medical school recommendations may influence the outcome.
