Muan International Airport crash victims' families demand accountability

On the 600th day following the Jeju Air passenger plane crash at Muan International Airport, the victims' bereaved families held a press conference to demand a thorough investigation and accountability. The families accused the government of negligence and a failed recovery process.

According to the bereaved families' association, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport falsely claimed that 99% of debris had been cleared just 15 days after the accident. However, a subsequent re-search revealed approximately 1,740 pieces of victim remains and thousands of personal belongings scattered across the airport site and inside sacks.

The families expressed frustration that no individuals have been prosecuted despite investigations by the police and the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Committee. They also noted that the investigation committee's transition to the Prime Minister's Office was delayed by five months in appointing a chairperson.

The association is calling for the state to lead funeral services for the newly recovered remains, provide relief for the families, and ensure a transparent investigation without exemptions. They also noted that they have faced resentment from local residents due to delays in the airport's reopening.
