Muara Takus temple complex to undergo restoration and excavation
Indonesia’s Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, has announced plans for the restoration and revitalization of the Muara Takus temple complex in Kampar Regency, Riau Province. During a site visit, the Minister noted that parts of the structures, which date back to the era of the Sriwijaya Kingdom, are experiencing degradation due to weathering and salt damage.
To address these issues, the Ministry of Culture intends to implement conservation measures beyond physical repairs, including water management, humidity control, and chemical stabilization of materials.
Additionally, recent archaeological findings suggest the temple complex may be larger than currently documented. New structures have been identified approximately 100 meters outside the existing main perimeter, currently located within plantation areas. Research teams are preparing excavation plans to uncover these buried structures and map the full extent of the historical site.
