Mucem hosts Manger les images exhibition in Marseille

The Mucem museum in Marseille has launched a new exhibition titled ‘Manger les images’ (Eating Images), which explores the historical and symbolic relationship between humanity and the consumption of visual representations. Running from October 28, 2026, to April 12, 2027, the exhibition examines how images—ranging from religious hosts and shaped breads to contemporary art—have been ingested for healing, protection, or social expression across Europe and the Mediterranean.

The exhibition features 435 works and objects, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, and films. Of these, 250 items are drawn from the Mucem’s own collections, including figurative cakes kept in cold storage. The exhibition also includes 42 works on loan from the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Featured artists include Albrecht Dürer, Ingres, Meret Oppenheim, and David Cronenberg, tracing a trajectory from ancient votive breads to modern food advertising and contemporary body art.
