Mud volcano eruption in Antioquia, Colombia affects livestock

A mud volcano eruption occurred in the rural area of San Pedro de Urabá, in the Antioquia department of Colombia. The event took place at the El Molinillo mud volcano in the Santa Catalina district, specifically affecting the Hacienda El 15 area.

The eruption caused a significant displacement of mud and sediment, which trapped and swept away several head of cattle. While the Colombian Livestock Federation (FEDEGÁN) noted the impact on livestock, local leaders and authorities confirmed that there have been no reported human casualties or destruction of homes.

This geological event follows a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck San José del Palmar, Chocó, on August 10. The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) explained that these eruptions are caused by high-pressure gases and plastic clay material rising through fractures in the Earth's crust. The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) noted that the Urabá region is home to 19 of Colombia's 62 known mud volcanoes.
