Mudslide in Haute‑Savoie Leaves 57‑Year‑Old Tourist Missing
On the evening of 4 August, heavy thunderstorms caused the Giffre River in Sixt‑Fer‑à‑Cheval, Haute‑Savoie, to surge and trigger a sudden mudslide. The flow swept away a 57‑year‑old woman from the Oise department who was returning on foot to her campsite with her husband and dog.
Rescue teams deployed more than 50 firefighters, gendarmes, helicopters, drones and divers, but the victim remains missing. Her husband told BFMTV, “Everything happened in a fraction of a second; I saw her disappear into the wall of concrete and mud.” Local authorities, including mayor Cédric Mionnet‑Perdu, confirmed the search continues under the command of the national gendarmerie.
