Sölden mudslide evacuation wastewater plant AT‑Alert

Severe thunderstorms on the night of 29‑30 July 2026 triggered mudslides (Muren) in the Ötztal villages of Sölden and Vent, Austria. The Land Tirol activated a civil‑protection alarm and the AT‑Alert at 22:15, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid basements and low‑lying areas. About 200‑300 people were moved to safety, many staying in a hotel in Vent.

A large mudslide destroyed the bridge to the municipal wastewater‑treatment plant, rendering the facility inoperable. The plant’s site was buried under metres of debris and water, prompting the regional authority to grant a temporary permit to divert untreated sewage directly into the Ötztaler Ache. Officials said no injuries were reported and that the drinking‑water supply remains unaffected.

Cleanup crews, including fire brigades, mountain‑rescue teams and additional personnel, began clearing roads and stabilising slopes on 30 July. Several basements and underground garages were flooded, but the town centre escaped major damage. Water‑storage reservoirs elsewhere in Tirol helped limit the flood impact in neighboring valleys.
