Mugur Mihăescu sparks controversy in Romanian Parliament
Romanian MP Mugur Mihăescu, representing the AUR party, has sparked significant controversy following remarks made during a parliamentary debate regarding legislative initiatives for female entrepreneurs. During the discussion, Mihăescu questioned the necessity of specific regulations for women in business, suggesting that the state should instead implement general measures for the entire business environment, such as tax reductions and increased predictability.
In his intervention, Mihăescu used analogies that critics described as offensive, asking, “What kind of laws are we passing? Female entrepreneurs... Why don't we pass ‘entrepreneur crocodiles’? Why don't we pass ‘entrepreneur dogs’?”
The comments drew sharp rebukes from businesswomen and political organizations. Entrepreneur Andreea Raicu criticized the remarks, noting that the MP is paid through public funds, including taxes from the very women he is ridiculing. Cristina Chiriac, president of the National Confederation for Female Entrepreneurship (CONAF), and various social-democratic organizations also condemned the comparisons, calling for sanctions against the deputy for his conduct.
