Anthony Loke defends nationwide RM1,000 aid for drivers
Transport Minister Anthony Loke has clarified that the RM1,000 special financial assistance for taxi, rental car, and school bus drivers is a nationwide initiative, rather than a localized effort for the upcoming Melaka state election.
The funds, which total approximately RM91.2 million, were generated from the sale of special ‘H’ series vehicle registration numbers. Loke stated that the distribution is being carried out in stages across various states, including Putrajaya, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, and Melaka, with Kedah scheduled as a future location.
The announcement has faced political scrutiny. Bersama leader Lee Chean Chung urged the Election Commission and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the timing and method of the announcement, questioning why it was disclosed during a political event rather than through official ministry channels. Additionally, UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh commented on the aid via social media, noting the shift in government policy regarding such allocations.
