Zemun mosque incident involves Muhamed Jusufspahić

A physical confrontation occurred at a mosque in Zemun, Belgrade, involving Muhamed Hamdi Jusufspahić, the President of the Assembly of the Islamic Community of Serbia. Video footage released on social media appears to show Jusufspahić attempting to physically prevent Imam Senad ef. Hajrović from delivering a sermon during Friday prayers.

The incident is part of an ongoing dispute regarding the institutional affiliation and management of the Zemun congregation. Tensions have risen following reports that a former religious official called for believers to vote on which Islamic community they wish to belong to. Jusufspahić has stated that such a vote cannot change the ownership of the mosque or its management rules.

The Islamic Community in Serbia has expressed concern over the situation, noting that police presence near the mosque has caused unrest among worshippers. They have called for impartial treatment by authorities and the protection of religious organizational rights. The dispute reflects a long-standing division between different Islamic organizations in Serbia that has persisted since 2007.
