Muhammad Haziq wins SUKMA 2026 badminton gold for Selangor

Muhammad Haziq Mohd Najib secured a gold medal for the Selangor contingent in the men's singles badminton event at the SUKMA 2026 games. Competing as an unseeded player, the 21-year-old defeated Ayu Fu Sheng of Negeri Sembilan with a score of 21-12, 15-21, 21-15 at the Setia City Convention Centre.

Haziq noted that the tournament draw appeared difficult, leading him to focus on his own capabilities and mental resilience. His victory in the final set was driven by following coaching instructions to maintain control over every point. As a free agent, Haziq expressed his determination to utilize this performance to seek selection for the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in September.

Other notable results from the SUKMA 2026 games include gold medals for the Pulau Pinang 4x400M relay team, Sarawak's Nur Eilisha Rania and Nur Farisya Alia in synchronized 10m platform diving, and Sabah's Gerfan Nigel Frank in men's pole vault.
