Muhammad Sarmuji inaugurated as Indonesia's Minister of Industry

Muhammad Sarmuji has been officially inaugurated as Indonesia’s Minister of Industry by President Prabowo Subianto, succeeding Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita. Sarmuji, a Golkar Party politician and former Secretary General of the party, aims to utilize the industrial sector as a primary lever for national economic growth and job creation.

During his handover ceremony, Sarmuji pledged to maintain policy continuity while introducing new innovations to strengthen the manufacturing sector. He emphasized the importance of coordinating with other ministries, such as Investment, Finance, and Trade, to provide necessary incentives and manage imports to protect domestic industry. He also highlighted a focus on labor-intensive sectors, including textiles and footwear.

The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) has identified five key priorities for the new minister, including maintaining industrial cost competitiveness through stable energy and logistics costs, and supporting labor-intensive industries.

Following his appointment, Sarmuji’s seat in the House of Representatives (DPR RI) is expected to be filled via an Inter-Time Replacement (PAW) mechanism by Kusuma Judi Leksono, the next highest vote-getter from the same electoral district in East Java.
