Muhammad Yunus receives Hillary Rodham Clinton Award

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presented the Hillary Rodham Clinton Awards at Georgetown University to honor global leaders advancing women’s economic security, entrepreneurship, and stability.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus was among the recipients. In his acceptance speech, Yunus noted that the honor recognizes 50 years of work in poverty alleviation and women’s empowerment through microcredit. Hillary Clinton praised the impact of Grameen Bank, stating she has seen how its work has helped women become self-reliant.

Other honorees included Reema Nanavaty, director of India’s Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA); fashion designer and Tory Burch Foundation founder Tory Burch; and Muna Sukhtian, who leads Jordan’s Microfund for Women. Sukhtian was the inaugural recipient of the Georgetown Ambassadors Award for her work supporting financial stability for Jordanian women and refugees.
