Muhammadiyah urges government action over controversial books

The central leadership of Muhammadiyah has called for urgent government intervention following the social media circulation of two controversial books, ‘Memburu Muhammad’ and ‘Bukan Perawan Maria’. Anwar Abbas, chairman of the Muhammadiyah Central Board, stated that authorities must act swiftly to prevent potential social unrest and protect religious harmony, arguing that the state has a responsibility to respond when religious teachings face disparagement.

The controversy stems from digital excerpts of the books that critics claim contain religious defamation. One of the works, ‘Memburu Muhammad’ by Feby Indirani, is described as a collection of short stories blending magical realism with social satire. The Ministry of Religious Affairs has expressed concern, noting that freedom of expression must be balanced with respect for the beliefs of others.

Law enforcement officials from Polda Metro Jaya have confirmed that an official inquiry is underway. The investigation will be conducted through the Cyber Directorate or the General Criminal Investigation Directorate to examine the origins and distribution of the texts.
