Muhammed Krubally serves as The Gambia’s first visually impaired magistrate
Muhammed Krubally, the first visually impaired magistrate in The Gambia, has presided over more than 1,000 civil and criminal cases since joining the bench. Appointed in 2016, Krubally utilizes assistive technology to navigate the courtroom environment, including JAWS (Job Access With Speech) screen-reading software and AI-enabled smart glasses to access information and documents.
In addition to technological aids, Krubally relies on auditory cues and the assistance of a court clerk to manage proceedings. The Gambia Organisation of the Visually Impaired (GOVI) recognizes him as the first person with a visual impairment to hold this judicial position in the country.
