Muhammed Raşid Aykota warns against unsupervised weight loss medication
Associate Professor Dr. Muhammed Raşid Aykota, an obesity and metabolic surgery specialist at Denizli Özel Tekden Hospital, has warned that weight loss shown on a scale does not always equate to healthy weight loss. He emphasized that obesity treatment must be conducted under expert supervision to avoid significant health risks.
Aykota noted that rapid weight loss through weight-loss injections can lead to nutritional deficiencies and the loss of muscle and lean body tissue. This is particularly concerning for elderly individuals, those with low physical activity, or those with inadequate nutritional intake. He stated that true success in treatment is defined by reducing fat mass and improving metabolic health rather than just lowering a number on the scale.
Furthermore, the specialist cautioned against using medications based on social media recommendations or advice from acquaintances. He stressed that every patient's health status, existing medications, and risk factors are unique. Specific groups, including those planning pregnancy, individuals with a history of certain thyroid cancers, or those with serious digestive system issues, require detailed medical evaluation before starting such treatments.
