Muhcab museum hosts Pequena África exhibition in Rio de Janeiro
The Museum of Afro-Brazilian History and Culture (Muhcab) in Rio de Janeiro has launched the 'Território Inventivo Pequena África' exhibition. The display focuses on the history of the Pequena África region and the Cais do Valongo, which was rediscovered roughly 15 years ago during urban revitalization projects.
The exhibition highlights the area's significance as a site of both the arrival of enslaved Africans and a center for cultural resistance and identity formation. Historical records indicate that over 1 million enslaved Africans passed through the Cais do Valongo during the 18th and 19th centuries. In 2017, UNESCO designated the site as a World Heritage site.
Visitors can experience the exhibition through immersive sensory elements, including an Atlantic Ocean-themed soundscape, interactive maps, scale models, and augmented reality technology designed to reconstruct the history of the region and its influential figures.
