Muhimbili-Mloganzila Hospital reports daily stroke admissions

Muhimbili-Mloganzila National Hospital in Dar es Salaam is admitting between five and seven stroke patients daily, according to neurologist Dr. Brighton Mushengezi. The high frequency highlights the growing health challenge posed by strokes, which occur when blood flow to the brain is obstructed or a blood vessel ruptures, depriving brain tissue of oxygen.

Dr. Mushengezi noted that global statistics from the World Stroke Organization indicate approximately 12 million people suffer strokes annually. He warned that one in four individuals aged 25 and older faces a lifetime risk of stroke. Common risk factors include hypertension, diabetes, tobacco use, physical inactivity, poor diet, and harmful alcohol consumption.

To mitigate these risks, medical experts advise lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and managing blood pressure and diabetes. Early recognition of symptoms—including facial drooping, limb weakness, speech difficulties, vision loss, and impaired walking—is critical for timely medical intervention.
