MUI East Java urges ban on sound horeg after three deaths

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in East Java is calling for a ban and stricter law enforcement regarding ‘sound horeg’—large-scale loudspeaker systems used in parades—following the deaths of three people in August 2026.

KH Ma'ruf Khozin, Chairman of the MUI East Java Fatwa Commission, stated that the issue has escalated from causing property damage and noise disturbances to claiming lives. He noted that while previous fatwas and provincial circulars were issued, current regulations lack the legal strength to prevent further incidents. He has proposed that the Governor or local regents issue more binding legal decisions.

Khozin also highlighted political challenges, suggesting some local leaders are hesitant to crack down on these parades due to political commitments made to loudspeaker owners during campaigns. He urged the police to take decisive action to prevent further casualties, especially as these events are expected to continue through the New Year period.
