MUI Vice Chairman addresses controversial sermon and government progress
KH Cholil Nafis, Vice Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), has called on Muslims to stop inviting or attending gatherings led by Habib Alwi bin Abdurrahman Assegaf. This follows the circulation of a controversial video in which the preacher reportedly made remarks perceived as demeaning toward women and discussed high sermon fees, including a joke about a minimum fee of Rp75 million.
Nafis stated that social status does not justify religious content that damages religious values, emphasizing that preachers should deliver messages that are polite and educational. The criticism was shared via his personal X account and the MUI Digital platform.
In a separate matter, MUI Vice Chairman Marsudi Syuhud commented on the two-year milestone of the Prabowo Subianto-Gibran administration. Syuhud characterized priority programs such as Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) and Sekolah Rakyat as pro-people initiatives. He encouraged the public to support these programs and the government's efforts in law enforcement and downstreaming industries to ensure benefits reach the citizenry.
