MUI Vice Chairman calls for global peace at Assisi forum
Marsudi Syuhud, Vice Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), called for global peace during the 40th International Meeting for Peace organized by the Community of Sant'Egidio in Assisi, Italy. Speaking at the forum titled ‘Unarmed and Disarming Peace’, Syuhud addressed the ongoing armed conflicts in Gaza, Myanmar, Ukraine, Iran, Palestine, and Yemen.
Representing Asia, the birthplace of many major world religions, Syuhud urged the international community not to import war to Asia, but rather to export Asian values of peace. He highlighted various religious principles such as the Islamic concept of ‘salam’, the Hindu ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, Buddhist ‘Ahimsa’, Confucian harmony, and Christian compassion as tools for dialogue and diplomacy.
Syuhud also cited the ‘Madinah Model’ as a historical precedent for pluralistic leadership. He noted that the Constitution of Madinah, established in 622 AD, successfully fostered peaceful coexistence among Muslims, Jews, Christians, and others, predating the European Magna Carta by over 400 years.
