Turkey launches Zero Waste initiatives for schools and plastic management

Turkey is intensifying its environmental efforts through two major initiatives: the Zero Waste Project in schools and the Turkey Plastic Waste Workshop in Istanbul.

Under the patronage of Emine Erdoğan, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has designated September as ‘Zero Waste in Schools’ month. This program, coordinated with the Ministry of National Education, aims to foster environmental awareness among students through waste separation training, composting applications, and recycling workshops.

Simultaneously, the Zero Waste Foundation hosted the Turkey Plastic Waste Workshop to address plastic pollution and promote a circular economy. The two-day event involved 15 thematic working groups and representatives from 17 ministries, academia, and the private sector. The workshop focused on the ‘2053 Turkey Plastic Vision,’ covering topics such as sustainable raw material production, eco-design, and the impact of microplastics on food security and human health.

The outcomes of these discussions are intended to serve as a foundation for Turkey’s upcoming role as host for the COP31 climate summit, aiming to transform waste management into a regional economic opportunity.
