Turkish municipalities launch environmental and urban development projects
In Antalya, experts and municipal officials are addressing concerns regarding the Boğaçayı project. While some critics have raised issues regarding pollution and maintenance, officials from the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality state that the area is undergoing a natural self-repair process. They clarified that the presence of reeds and aquatic plants is not a sign of pollution but rather a vital habitat for fish and birds that acts as a natural filter. This year, controlled harvesting removed 320 tons of aquatic plants and approximately 4 tons of physical waste, including plastics and furniture, to maintain ecological balance without using chemicals.
In Mersin, the Mezitli City Square Project has officially commenced with a groundbreaking ceremony. The 138 million lira investment covers a 38,000 square meter area, which will include 16,700 square meters of green space, a 5,200 square meter city square, and a 163-vehicle parking lot. Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Vahap Seçer stated that the project aims to enhance social and cultural life while providing much-needed green space for residents. The project is expected to be completed within 180 days.
Additionally, a coastal cleanup effort was conducted in the Söğüt area of Muğla. Led by the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality and various NGOs, the operation collected approximately one ton of waste and 125 bags of trash from coastal areas that are inaccessible by road, specifically targeting microplastics and debris to protect the marine ecosystem.
