Muğla Metropolitan Municipality launches 23 barrier-free beaches
Muğla Metropolitan Municipality has implemented the ‘Engelsiz Plajlar Projesi’ (Barrier-Free Beaches Project) to provide safe and independent sea access for individuals with disabilities. The initiative includes 23 barrier-free beaches distributed across eight districts in Muğla.
To ensure comprehensive accessibility, the municipality provides physical infrastructure such as ramps and specialized ground surfaces, alongside annual maintenance and repairs. Additionally, the project includes a transportation component where ‘Engelli Nakil Araçları’ (Disability Shuttle Vehicles) collect citizens from their homes and return them after their visit to the beach.
The project has received international recognition, winning an honorable mention at the 2022 ‘Human City Design’ awards organized by the Seoul Design Foundation. The project was selected from over 100 applications representing 22 different countries.
