Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University patents two furniture industry innovations
Researchers at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University (MSKÜ) have developed two innovative inventions for the furniture industry that have been officially patented by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. Developed by Prof. Dr. Ali Kasal and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tolga Kuşkun from the Department of Woodworking Industrial Engineering, the projects involved international academic collaboration with Prof. Dr. Jerzy Smardzewski from Poznan University of Life Sciences in Poland.
The first invention, titled ‘Innovative Connection Structure’, serves as an alternative to traditional fasteners in panel furniture. It is designed to allow assembly without the need for auxiliary tools or glue, aiming to provide technical and economic advantages for both manufacturers and end-users by increasing production speed and flexibility.
The second invention, the ‘Test Apparatus for L-Type Corner Joining’, is designed to evaluate the performance of furniture under real-world usage conditions. By allowing for the testing of backed L-type corner joints rather than entire large-scale furniture pieces, the apparatus offers significant savings in both time and materials during durability testing.
