Mulchén experiences suspected tornado causing structural damage

A suspected tornado struck the Mirador de Biobío sector in the commune of Mulchén, Biobío Region, on Sunday afternoon. The phenomenon, described by witnesses and local authorities as highly unusual for the area, caused significant structural damage to a private property.

Reports indicate that a large shed was almost entirely destroyed, left “practically on the ground,” while a nearby residence sustained damage to its roof and structure. In addition to the wind damage, the municipality reported flooding in the Munilque Izaurieta sector and street flooding in Salvo, Los Carreras, and Los Canelos.

Mulchén Mayor José Miguel Muñoz confirmed that municipal emergency crews have been deployed to assess the damage and provide aid to affected families. While witnesses and local officials have characterized the event as a tornado, the Red Geocientífica de Chile noted a lack of visual records of a funnel cloud. The Dirección Meteorológica de Chile (DMC) and SENAPRED are expected to conduct technical evaluations to officially confirm the nature of the phenomenon. No injuries have been reported.
