Mulegé hosts third annual Date Festival to promote local agriculture
The Ejido Alfredo V. Bonfil community in the Mulegé municipality hosted its third annual Feria del Dátil (Date Festival) to showcase the region’s date palm industry. The event featured 43 vendors offering fresh fruit, date-based breads, ice cream, liqueurs, and handmade crafts made from palm materials.
The local date palm industry produces approximately 240 tons annually from 235 hectares, generating an estimated 7.3 million pesos in annual value for local producers. Officials noted that the crop provides a vital source of steady income for farming families in a region traditionally known for fishing and mining.
The Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur (UABCS) participated as part of the organizing committee. Students and researchers from the Agronomy and Agribusiness programs provided academic support, including a demonstration module on product transformation and serving as evaluators for artisanal bread and stand competitions.
