Mullvad to decommission public encrypted DNS servers by 2026
Swedish VPN provider Mullvad has announced it will shut down its public encrypted DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) and DNS-over-TLS (DoT) servers on November 2, 2026. The company plans to redirect its resources to financially support the privacy-focused nonprofit Quad9 instead.
Mullvad stated that maintaining a separate public DNS infrastructure duplicates the work already performed by the Quad9 Foundation. The company noted that the service is unnecessary for users already connected to the Mullvad VPN, as those requests are handled by internal resolvers.
Migration details vary by user type. Mullvad Browser users who have not changed the default settings will be automatically switched to Quad9. However, users who have manually configured Mullvad’s DNS at the operating system, router, or application level must migrate to a new provider before the deadline. Those who used customized DoH configurations in the Mullvad Browser will also need to make manual changes.
