MultiCare, Premera Blue Cross Secure Coverage for 100,000 Washington Patients

Washington‑state hospital system MultiCare and insurer Premera Blue Cross announced a preliminary agreement that will keep Premera members covered at in‑network rates. The deal comes after months of negotiations that threatened out‑of‑network costs for roughly 100,000 households, including about 16,000 insured through the School Employee Benefits Board.

Both parties said they will share more details once the contract is finalized. MultiCare operates 13 hospitals and numerous clinics, and the insurer reported that about 163,000 Premera‑covered individuals have filed claims in the system over the past two years. Bill Akers, Premera’s executive vice‑president of sales and marketing, and MultiCare spokesperson Scott Thompson issued statements praising the partnership and the patience of members.
