The family invested $75,000 to renovate a 900-square-foot finished basement into a private in-law suite for the mother. This suite features a separate entrance to ensure privacy. The arrangement was financially driven; the mother used $150,000 in profit from the sale of her Florida home to contribute to the down payment and renovations, while the daughter and her husband contributed $50,000. The mother now contributes $1,200 monthly toward the mortgage, making homeownership more manageable for the entire household.
