Multilingualism and Polyphenol-Rich Diet May Delay Brain Aging, Studies Show

Recent research indicates that speaking multiple languages is associated with a younger‑appearing brain and a delayed diagnosis of dementia, though it does not lower the overall risk of developing the disease. One large study of about 39,000 participants found a six‑year brain‑age delay for bilinguals and up to 13 years for speakers of four languages, while another European analysis of 86,000 people linked monolingualism to more than double the chance of faster brain ageing. Researchers suggest that multilingualism may build a “brain reserve” that masks early dementia signs.

A separate narrative review of polyphenol‑rich foods—such as berries, cocoa, tea, coffee and olive oil—found consistent associations with reduced cognitive decline in observational studies, especially within Mediterranean‑ or MIND‑style diets. Laboratory and animal data suggest these compounds may protect against cellular damage, chronic inflammation and protein buildup linked to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, though large‑scale human trials are still needed.
