Multimodal AI and 5G technology advance urban mobility and security
Technological advancements in multimodal artificial intelligence and mobile networks are transforming urban management and security. In Italy, the smart city market has reached a value of 1.03 billion euros, with significant investments directed toward intelligent mobility and urban safety.
New developments in sensor technology and AI are evolving IP cameras from simple visual tools into intelligent nodes. These systems combine video, audio, radar, and environmental sensors to provide real-time situational awareness, allowing for better distinction between routine activities and emerging risks in complex transport infrastructures.
Additionally, Ericsson has introduced the Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) system, which enables mobile networks to function similarly to radar. By analyzing radio signals reflected off objects, the system can detect and track low-altitude objects, such as drones, using existing 5G infrastructure. This technology is intended for use in national defense, critical infrastructure protection, and public safety, with pilot projects expected to begin in 2027.
