Multiorgan donation performed at Vito Fazzi Hospital in Lecce
A 58‑year‑old woman who died in the anesthesia and resuscitation unit of Vito Fazzi Hospital in Lecce donated her heart, liver, kidneys and corneas after having expressed consent while alive. The retrieval involved the unit’s staff, the operative team and several specialists, coordinated by the hospital’s medical director.
Director General of ASL Lecce Gianluca Capochiani called the act "one of the highest expressions of solidarity and civil responsibility" and thanked the donor’s family and the professionals involved. The donation marks the fifth multiorgan donation recorded at the Vito Fazzi facility since the start of 2026. The donor’s consent had been registered through the standard procedure of declaring organ donation wishes on an identity card or via local health authorities.
