Croatia tightens electric‑scooter and motorcycle safety after serious injuries
A series of traffic incidents across Croatia have prompted authorities to strengthen safety measures for electric scooters and motorcycles. In Makarska a 70‑year‑old woman was seriously injured when struck by an electric scooter on a pavement, leading the city council to plan a ban on scooters in pedestrian zones and on sidewalks by the end of the year. Police operations in Lika, Dubrovnik, Međimurje and other counties recorded dozens of traffic violations, including failures to wear helmets, mobile‑phone use while driving and alcohol‑related offences. Two minors were seriously injured after falling from a scooter in Vrsima near Zadar; neither wore a helmet and one suffered life‑threatening injuries. A 20‑year‑old motorcyclist died after a high‑speed crash in Mokošice, with police noting they did not attempt to stop the unregistered scooter. Additional serious injuries involved motorcyclists in Blagaj, Žabnik and other locations, many of whom were found to be riding without a licence or under the influence of alcohol. Law‑enforcement agencies have issued fines, vehicle seizures and, in repeated cases, custodial sentences.
