Ecuador and neighboring nations experience spate of killings and violent incidents in early August
On the night of 6 August and the morning of 7 August, a series of violent incidents were reported across Latin America. In Ecuador, a municipal official in Manta was shot dead while working in the Risk Management and Environment department. The same period saw the murder of laboratory doctor Manuel Asisclo Contreras Contreras at his home in Guayaquil, and the discovery of the decapitated body of key witness Yelibert Moreira near Yaguachi, Guayas. In Bolivia, a 44‑year‑old man, Simón Quispe Bolívar, died during a police pursuit of a white van on a rural road. Costa Rica recorded a fatal shooting in Germania de Siquirres, Limón. In Peru, a confrontation linked to local drug‑trade activity ended with a man killed by a gunshot to the head in the Bella Vista area of San Sebastián. A separate traffic accident on the Santo Domingo–La Concordia highway in Ecuador also left one person dead.
These events highlight a sudden rise in homicides, targeted killings and lethal confrontations in the region, prompting calls for increased security measures and investigations by local authorities.
