Multiple myeloma research advances in Salamanca

Researchers in Salamanca, Spain, are advancing the understanding of multiple myeloma through studies on the p53 protein. A study conducted by teams from CIBERONC, the Biomedical Research Institute of Salamanca (IBSAL), and the Cancer Research Center has identified how post-translational modifications of the p53 protein can help predict patient evolution. While traditional research focuses on whether the TP53 gene is mutated or lost, this work highlights how chemical changes regulate the protein's stability and its ability to respond to DNA damage.

In a separate clinical development, hematologist María Victoria Mateos has published an editorial in 'The New England Journal of Medicine' regarding the management of early relapse in multiple myeloma. Following the results of the phase III MajesTEC-9 clinical trial, Mateos argues for a redefinition of how early relapses are handled. She notes that while modern treatments—including proteasome inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies—have significantly extended survival, they have also created a new challenge: a growing number of patients relapsing after only one or two lines of therapy, making the disease more complex to treat.
