Multiple sclerosis patients in Brazil face loss of autonomy and treatment barriers

A new study conducted by HSR Health in partnership with Roche Farma Brasil and the Brazilian Multiple Sclerosis Association (ABEM) highlights the profound impact of multiple sclerosis on patients in Brazil. The research indicates that the greatest challenge for patients is the gradual and often invisible loss of autonomy, affecting mobility, work, and daily routines. Approximately 70% of patients report significant concern regarding disease progression, while 41.2% have had to delay or miss treatments due to access barriers, such as insurance bureaucracy or medication shortages.

In response to these challenges, Senator Flávio Arns has advocated for increased awareness and the protection of rights for those living with the condition. During a Senate plenary session, Arns emphasized the need for timely diagnosis and integral follow-up. He also supported Bill 2.360/2024, which proposes allowing workers or their dependents diagnosed with multiple sclerosis or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) to withdraw funds from their FGTS (Severance Indemnity Fund).
