Multiple Sclerosis research highlights gut bacteria and EBV connections
Researchers at the Cittadella Universitaria di Monserrato in Italy reported that a low presence of the gut bacterium Akkermansia massiliensis is associated with a higher risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS). The study linked this deficiency to altered B‑cell function and reduced FcRL3 protein production, suggesting a possible protective role for the bacterium.
A separate Canadian study re‑examined the long‑standing hypothesis that infection with the Epstein‑Barr virus (EBV) is a prerequisite for MS. The new analysis found the association weaker than previously thought, casting doubt on EBV’s causal role in the disease. Together, the findings provide fresh insight into biological factors that may influence MS susceptibility and point toward potential preventive or therapeutic strategies.
