Romania government plans school safety measures after weapon attacks
Following two violent incidents involving bladed weapons in Bistrița and Pitești, the Romanian government is developing an integrated action plan to enhance school safety. In Bistrița, a 13-year-old student attacked a teacher and a classmate with a knife, while in Pitești, a 15-year-old student injured two classmates with a machete.
Education Minister Sorin Costreie has proposed adding 1,000 security guard positions to schools, prioritizing high-risk units. He also advocated for amending the penal code to treat assaults on teachers as an aggravating circumstance, similar to protections afforded to medical personnel.
Prime Minister Luca Niculescu convened an emergency meeting to establish a plan involving the Ministry of Internal Affairs, psychologists, and educators. The proposed strategy includes preventive presence in school zones, zero tolerance for weapons, and increased psychological counseling. Additionally, President Nicușor Dan emphasized the need for improved digital safety and protection for minors in online spaces.
