Multivitamins may support physical function in older adults

A study involving more than 21,000 older adults, known as the COSMOS study, suggests that daily multivitamin consumption may help maintain physical function and quality of life during aging. Participants who took daily multivitamins reported slightly better physical performance in activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and performing household chores compared to those receiving a placebo.

While the findings indicate fewer health complaints and better physical scores, researchers noted that the observed benefits are relatively small. The study has not yet undergone peer review, and some assessments relied on participant questionnaires. Previous analyses from the COSMOS study also suggested potential links between multivitamins and slower biological aging, as well as a lower risk of cognitive and memory decline, though results regarding cancer or cardiovascular disease risks remain inconsistent.
