Mumbai airport defers international flight shift to Navi Mumbai until 2027

The planned relocation of international flights from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has been deferred until March 2027. The decision follows significant opposition from airlines, which described the original timeline as “unachievable” and cited a lack of prior consultation.

Following intervention by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) and Adani Airports Holdings Ltd (AAHL) met with the Airline Operators Committee (AOC) to address concerns. MIAL has assured carriers that their historical slot allocations will remain unchanged during the upcoming winter schedule to minimize operational disruptions.

The delay is intended to provide airlines more time to plan operations as AAHL prepares for the phased redevelopment of Terminal 1 (T1). A joint working group has been established to develop an implementation plan for the T1 renovation over the next two weeks. Traffic-balancing measures and potential shifts to NMIA are now expected to align with the summer schedule in 2027.
