Mumbai Airport: DRI seizes 14.81 crore rupees worth of gold hidden in food

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has dismantled a gold smuggling ring, seizing 9.40 kilograms of foreign gold valued at 14.81 crore rupees. Three individuals were arrested at Mumbai Airport following their arrival from Dubai.

The smugglers utilized a sophisticated method of concealing gold powder within 33.50 kilograms of various food items, including milk powder, oats, flour, Nutella, and coconut milk powder. The gold was processed to match the color, texture, and density of the food products to evade airport scanning and screening technologies.

Following the seizure, authorities extracted the pure gold through specialized processing. The arrested individuals reportedly acted as couriers for an organized syndicate. The DRI is currently investigating the network to identify the primary handlers and the full extent of the smuggling operation between Dubai and Mumbai.
