Mumbai Airport to begin Terminal 1 redevelopment in January 2027

Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), will begin a phased redevelopment of the North Section of Terminal 1B starting in January 2027. The move is driven by safety concerns regarding the nearly 60-year-old infrastructure, a risk highlighted by a fire incident at the terminal in April 2026.

The first phase involves demolishing the North Section, which accounts for approximately one-third of Terminal 1's capacity. While this will temporarily affect about 5 million passengers annually (roughly 9% of the airport's 55 million total), AAHL expects 91% of passenger traffic to remain unaffected. The redevelopment is projected to increase Terminal 1's annual handling capacity by 33%, from 15 million to 20 million passengers.

To minimize disruption, airlines have the option to temporarily relocate operations to the Navi Mumbai International Airport. Additionally, MIAL plans to invest ₹2,000 crore in airside projects to boost peak-hour capacity from 46 to between 52 and 55 aircraft movements per hour. These infrastructure improvements include constructing new taxiways, expanding apron areas, and enhancing guidance and control systems.
