Mumbai Airport to shift flight operations during terminal redevelopment
Mumbai International Airport is set to undergo significant operational shifts starting in October 2026 to facilitate the redevelopment of Terminal 1.
Beginning October 1, approximately one-third of air traffic movements will be transferred to the Navi Mumbai International Airport. This includes a proposed shift of 30 per cent of international flights currently operating from Terminal 2. Additionally, starting October 25, one-third of flights currently utilizing Terminal 1 are scheduled to move to Terminal 2.
The restructuring is part of a phased redevelopment plan for the nearly 80-year-old Terminal 1. Demolition work on the northern section of Terminal 1B, which handles roughly 5 million passengers annually, is slated to begin on January 15, 2027.
Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) has informed the Civil Aviation Ministry of these plans and is coordinating with airlines to manage the transition. Passengers with existing bookings are advised to verify their specific terminal and airport details with their airlines to avoid confusion.
