Mumbai: Benzene tanker leak contained in Chembur

A chemical leak involving a tanker carrying approximately 28 tonnes of benzene was detected near the Mysore Colony Monorail station in Chembur, Mumbai, on Monday evening. The leak occurred around 8:12 PM on Mahul Road.

Emergency response teams, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police, and civic disaster management, cordoned off a 500-meter radius around the vehicle to ensure public safety. To mitigate the risk of fire or vapor dispersion, officials conducted a decanting operation to transfer the benzene into an empty tanker. The process was successfully completed by 10:20 PM, and both tankers were moved to the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) refinery premises.

Authorities confirmed that no injuries or casualties resulted from the incident. In a separate, unrelated incident on the same night, a tanker carrying glacial acetic acid tilted after getting stuck in a roadside chamber in Mulund West, though no leakage was reported there.
