Mumbai Crime Branch arrests man over threats from Pakistani number

The Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested a 45-year-old security guard, Mohammad Sharif, in connection with threats received from a Pakistani phone number. The investigation began after businessman Imtiaz Khatri received threatening WhatsApp calls and voice messages following a demolition drive in the Bandra area of Mumbai.

Sharif, originally from the Poonch region of Jammu and Kashmir, had been working as a security guard in Mumbai since 2008 and was most recently residing in Satara, Maharashtra. During the investigation, police discovered evidence on Sharif’s mobile phone indicating contact with an individual using the Pakistani number.

Authorities are currently investigating the nature of Sharif’s relationship with the person in Pakistan and whether he played a direct or indirect role in the threats. The scope of the investigation has expanded after police learned that Sharif’s father resides in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Investigators are examining digital evidence, including the frequency and content of the communications, to determine the full extent of the connection.
